Grupo Mexico to boost production at home, in Peru.(Grupo Industrial Minera Mexico S.A. de C.V. planning to raise its copper production)(Brief article)

Mexican mining company Grupo Mexico plans to raise its copper production through expansions at the Cananea mine in northwestern Mexico and the Tia Maria project in southern Peru. Southern Peru Copper, a subsidiary, will produce 110,000 metric tons/year of copper cathode at Tia Maria using the SX-EW (solvent extraction-electrowinning) process. The project is expected to take two years to complete.

Grupo Mexico produced 690,000 metric tons of copper in 2005. In the first half of 2006, output was down 13.8% from the year-ago period to 285,000 metric tons, affected by strikes at La Caridad and Cananea mines.
