Dow leverages vendor-managed inventory for office supplies.

By Maria Varmazis Stick with what works, says Tary Schumacher, global supply manager, shared services purchasing at Midland, Mich.-based Dow Chemical. And when it comes to buying office supplies at Dow Chemical, supplier-managed inventory has been working well. Dow has leveraged the strategy in one form or another for the indirect buy since the mid-1990s.
"When you look at buying of office products, you want to make it easy, fast and cost-effective, and that's what we think we have with this process," Schumacher says. Dow Chemical partnered with Staples about three years ago for its office supplies after deciding to consolidate down to a single supplier for office products.
