By James Carbone Light emitting diode (LED) manufacturer Cree has announced it is shipping "warm" white LEDs that can be used in new applications. LEDs are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, but most white LEDs emit a harsh, glaring light unsuitable for many general purpose lighting applications.
Cree's XLamp LEDs emit a softer white light that can be used in lighting fixtures for homes and business, according to the company. XLamp LEDs are qualified to run at up to 700 mA. The new warm white is available in both the XLamp XR-E and XR-C power LED families.
