A soccer ball-size explosive materials detection system is under development at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M. Though the device cannot be submerged, it detects and identifies underwater explosives based on molecules' attraction to a specific polymer fiber.
* Metal-Filled Buckyballs Made Easy
Researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, discovered a less expensive method of mass-producing metal-containing fullerenes. The key is letting atmospheric nitrogen into the heated reaction area, where metal atoms are attracted to it and get trapped inside fullerenes as they cool.
