R & D, September, 2001

According to the July 2001 Express Report published by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), San Jose, Calif., the North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $764 million in orders for that month. The figure represents a book-to-bill ratio of 0.67, which meant that $67 worth of new orders was received for every $100 of product shipped for the month.

The bookings figure is 5% above the revised June 2001 level of $727.5 million and 74% below the $2.9 billion in orders posted in July 2000. A spokesperson for SEMI said that the figures suggest that capital equipment orders may have reached bottom.
