A field deployable integrated system for countering aerosol bioterrorism has been jointly developed by Los Alamos (N.M.) National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore (Calif.) National Laboratory, and Rupprecht and Patashnick Co., Inc., Albany, N.Y. Built for outdoor or indoor use, BASIS (Biological Aerosol Sentry and Information System) consists of air samplers, regulating software, and a portable DNA analysis laboratory to detect and identify strains of fatal viruses and bacteria in less than a half day. Its design allows the testing of air over precise time periods and areas, while guaranteeing the source, time, and reliability of the samples.
