R & D, March, 2006
Tiny chemical cages created by researchers at Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, N.J., show potential for delivering drugs to organs or tissues where they are needed--without causing harm elsewhere. These octahedral molecules have a cavity volume of almost 2 [nm.sup.3] and are created in a one-step process that creates tight chemical bonds between six larger bowl-shaped molecules and 12 smaller linear molecules or bridges. Early research suggests that the connections between the bridges and bowls can be broken and reattached to introduce "payload" molecules into the cage and extract them when needed.
