BUSINESS CASUAL has lost another battle for the soul of Wall Street thanks to Bear Stearns, which recently reinstated its formal dress code.
As of September 30, all male employees of the firm had to dig their suits and ties back out of the closet, while the women now have to wear "a suit with either a skirt or slacks, a dress or other equivalent attire."
Bear Stearns was late to loosen its collective necktie, adopting a "dressy casual" code just two years ago, well after the Internet khaki revolution had started running out of steam. Significantly, the firm had been relatively conservative in granting fashion freedom, and never fully relaxed its dress policy for in-house lawyers, administrators or private client service teams.
