Cell phone bank withdrawal. (Short message: around the wireless industry).(cell phone usage banned in banks)(Brief Article)

Wireless Asia, January, 2002

Police in the Nigerian state of Lagos have banned the use of cell phones in banking halls as part of a move to beef up bank security following a rash of bank robberies. The ban was part of a long list of extra security measures for banks issued by the Lagos State Police Command. No reason was given for putting a cell phone ban on the list, but local newspaper Vanguard speculated the move could be due to a recent warning from the Canadian government that some criminals were planning to import guns that look like cell phones.

(See the December 2000 installment of short message for more on cell phone guns. Just, er, ignore the part where short message speculates that reports of such guns were a hoax--they have since proven to be very real.)
