Readers of this magazine are no doubt aware that after years of bickering, the six Hong Kong cellular operators have finally reached agreement on allowing inter-network SMS. Hong Kongers barely had time to boot up their mobiles when the gang of six, unprompted, came out with yet another agreement, this one with the laudable aim of barring unsolicited SMS, or "spare".

Coining a new acronym IOSMS (inter-operator SMS), the six said in a joint statement on 3 December: "Promotional IOSMS shall ONLY be sent with the recipient's prior consent. It is the sender's obligation to procure such consent."

That's tremendous; an unambiguous public stand against annoying commercial email, and certainly a breath of fresh air from the Hong Kong mobile operators. Not...
