The ITU has ordained five standards as the official 3G technologies, yet we all know what can happen to officially declared standards. Take WAP for example, a heavily-backed technology which still trails the field. Or take the Internet, which has been without any formal connections, and was in fact opposed by most incumbent telecom companies.

With many 3G operators weighed down either by debts incurred in the auction process or license performance commitments, it is little wonder that a number of small vendors are betting on a demand from service providers for cost-effective alternatives. Here is a form guide, and betting odds, for the other 3Gs.
