Chinese high school students are coming under scrutiny for their questionable choice of mobile ring tones.

The official China Daily reports that a tune associated with Japan's invasion of the mainland, Japanese entering a village, has become a popular ring tone download. "A boy's cellphone rang during class and the tune played but it only triggered laughter among his classmates," the paper said.

The melody was the soundtrack from a well-known film about the anti-Japanese war of 1936-45, "but the 'digitized' way cellphones play it make it sound humorous," the paper said.

Hong Xuji, a member of the Beijing People's Political Consultative Conference, said young people should think about the meaning of the tune.
