WiMAX to cut energy opex.(IN SIGHT: ONE MONTH'S WIRELESS RESEARCH)

Wireless Asia, January, 2007

With energy costs now the third most significant operating expense for cellular operators, the integration of WiMAX and metro Wi-Fi with cellular technology, becomes a good option for mobile carriers. According to ABI Research, from a pure coverage perspective, WiMAX is twice as energy-cost-effective and metro Wi-Fi is 50 times more energy-cost-effective than W-CDMA. Considering data traffic, WiMAX can accommodate 11 times today's average data consumption, but is still more energy-cost-efficient than W-CDMA or HSDPA. The advent of mobile broadband will further boost energy consumption from 42.9 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2005 to 124.4 bill kWh in 2011. Asia Pacific will account for majority orris growth.
