New composite developed at WSU.(News)

Wood Based Panels International, December, 2002

A team of Washington State University researchers has developed a way to turn wheat straw harvest residue into specialised building materials.

The team uses microscopic fungi to degrade straw, which they then grind into a powder and mix with plastic. This becomes a doughy substance which is forced through a die to create custom pieces of moulding, siding or decking. The finished product is lightweight, relatively cheap, can be dyed to match almost any colour, and is said to have the look of traditional wood products.

Unlike manufacturing plants which use wheat straw to make pressed board panels, similar to particleboard, the WSU team's wheat straw composite can be formed into a variety of shapes and sizes.
