The study of social relations has always been an important intellectual focus of Americanist studies. Fred Eggan's pioneering work defining structural aspects of Cheyenne and Arapaho kinship systems and his later social organizational systems among the western Pueblos attest to the importance of utilizing both historical sources and contemporary data collected through fieldwork.
