Alejandro Malaspina, with Jose Bustamante y Guerra, commanded Spain's greatest global scientific voyage in 1791 but, before the publication of his findings, fell into disfavor and died in exile. In 1792, Malaspina arranged for a second exploration around present-day Vancouver Island under the command of Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes aboard the Mexicano and the Sutil.
