The two volumes reviewed here represent opposite ends of the spectrum of archaeological publications aimed at professional and general audiences. The volume edited by Seeman is a collection of symposium papers presented at the 1989 Society for American Archaeology meeting that address various aspects of Woodland period (ca. 1000 B.C. - A.D. 1000) prehistory along the middle Ohio River valley. This volume is designed to examine settlement and subsistence variability to facilitate a better understanding of the emergence of complexity among tribal societies.
