Herman J. Viola, the editor of the library of the American Indian and the author of the foreword to this book, refers to Joseph Medicine Crow as one of the most famous storytellers of the Crow people. Born in 1913 in Lodge Grass, Montana, and raised by traditional grandparents, Joseph Medicine Crow became the first member of the Crow Nation of Montana to graduate from college, later earning a Master's degree in anthropology from the University of Southern California.
