Narrative accounts of white captives among Indians have long been seen by American literary and cultural historians as revealing the national myths, cultural identities, and/or racist tendencies of Euroamericans. While other historians have made limited use of certain captivity narratives, they have generally regarded the genre with suspicion because of its ideological underpinnings.
