Blake Debassige, Shirley Cheechoo, James Simon Mishibinijima and Leland Bell are Anishnaabe painters from Manitoulin Island. Their work, which has been called the 'Woodland school,' has tended to be dismissed by art critics, who have applied inappropriate criteria instead of appreciating the work on its own terms. The paintings show the influence of shamanic art forms. The artists' views on art, stylistic influences and some individual paintings are discussed.
