Anthony Aveni has pointed out that Aristotle, writing on the constitution of Athens, described the connection between the political structure of the city and the calendar and other institutions dependent on close observation of celestial patterns. In classical China, similar relationships go back at least as far as this.

Such observations might, by a stretch of the second term in the combination word, be called politicoastronomy. They provide precedents for archaeoastronomy and ethnoastronomy which, as distinctive viewpoints on tribal cultures, are fairly new developments. Earth ...
