In 1960 Oliver Knight broke new ground with his study of newspaper correspondents who covered the Indian-white wars in the post-Civil War years. Although it fell short of being a definitive work, no comprehensive study on the subject has been produced to supersede it. Thus the University of Oklahoma Press has reissued the book in a paperback edition for the benefit of a new generation of readers. A helpful but basically uncritical foreword written by Sherry L. Smith introduces this new release.
