This book is a welcome addition to our growing knowledge and understanding of the Indian people living within the region that the French called the pays d `en haut. Picking up where Richard White's The Middle Groundleft off, Edmunds and Peyser examine the Foxes' uneasy and fateful relationship with the French. The result is an interesting and convincing study of "the people of the red earth". (p. 32).
