Studying histories of American Indian women is difficult because of the many and varied elements in the backgrounds and lives of native women as well as the lack of scholarly research surrounding oral history and tradition. Issues of race, gender and class are so varied among native women that it would be impossible to create a model of the Native American woman. To understand the complexities of native women and native people in general researchers and writers must look to the women specifically for their unique perception of themselves and their culture.
