An enthymeme is a brief syllogism, one more familiar than rigidly structured logic and omitting what listeners or readers already understand. Novels by N. Scott Momaday should be read as enthymemes that share cultural knowledge through a structure whose goal is agreement and understanding. Characters in 'House Made of Dawn' and 'The Ancient Child' enter a dialogical relationship with their communities once they have re-experienced those cultures' philosophy and storytelling.
