James Welch, noted Blackfeet novelist, died at the age of sixty-two in Missoula, Montana, on Monday, August 4, 2003. His death, preceded by a struggle with lung cancer, marked the end of an impressive career during which he received the Native Writer's Lifetime Achievement Award from his peers and the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters medal from the French government, who had begun to appreciate the power of Welch's vision.
