Word Ways, May, 2009 by Darryl Francis

According to Wikipedia: "Dronedarone (also known as SR33589 or Multaq) is a drug under--evelopment bSanofi-Aventis, mainly for the indication of cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)."

Note that drug name--DRONEDARONE. it's only a single letter A away from being a 12-letter term containing two instances of six different letters.

Is there a variant form of it, perhaps called A-DRONEDARONE or DRONEDARONE-A? Can it be found as the first item in a list, where it is shown as A. DRONEDARONE? Failing that, are there examples of the two words A and DRONEDARONE simply appearing together?

A-DRONEDARONE and DRONEDARONE-A We tried Googling these, but came up with nothing.

A. DRONEDARONE We found these examples via Google: "(a) Dronedarone block of HERG currents consists of two components, as illustrated by a graphical overlay of the control recording and the first two measurements after incubation with 10 M dronedarone."

"The major findings of this study indicate that: (a) Dronedarone, unlike amiodarone, does not produce considerable repolarization lengthening in dog ventricular muscle after chronic treatment."

A DRONEDARONE Much commoner. Among the examples we found were these:

"Cautiously anticipating a dronedarone approval, as all experts heartwire contacted appear to be doing, Dr Andrea Natale (Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute at St David's Medical Center, Austin, TX) said clinicians are hoping that the drug's efficacy against AF will at least approach that of amiodarone while being free of significant adverse effects."

"A glass vial with a total volume of 3 ml, comprising 1 ml of a dronedarone hydrochloride composition as prepared in Example 1, is sterilized in an autoclave at 121[degrees]C. for 35 minutes."

"Sanofi-Synthelabo also has a dronedarone follow-up compound, SSR 149744, which was in Phase I trials in 2003."
