Grant-making foundations distributed $27.6 billion last year, much of it ostensibly devoted to social change. Ultimately, all such grants must be approved by foundation trustees; and the typical foundation board is dominated by business and civic leaders. Lately, however, foundations, especially liberal ones, have endeavored to diversify their boards.
