SCIENCE FICTION TO THE EDITORS: I want to clarify a remark of mine that John Judis quoted in his article "Science Fiction" [TAP, May 21, 2001]. Judis states that support for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is growing disproportionately compared with funding for other federal science agencies.

I certainly agree with him that this is a cause for concern. However, that was not my point when I said--as he correctly quotes--"One agency growing quicker than the others doesn't really seem very fair." I was simply parodying the arguments made by ...
