Bad Faith

JOSHUA GREEN'S "BAD FAITH" was excellent [TAP, July 30, 2001]. I am the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, and it may come as a surprise to you that historically we are a quite liberal church in the Baptist universe. Along with a rabbi in attendance at the meeting, I was the only other member of the clergy to challenge President Bush's faith-based proposal--an initiative I view with utter cynicism. It is an attempt to appease the religious right, which it is not doing, and to garner the African-American vote, namely the black church.
