Fifty years later, a railroad map would be your best guide to figuring out where the nation was expanding. Ike's interstate highway system foreshadowed the population explosion in the Sun Belt, as did the routes of natural-gas pipelines and diagrams of Ma Bell's long-distance lines, as did air-traffic maps some years later.
