IN "CAN LIBERALS SAVE Capitalism (Again)?" [August 12], Robert Kuttner does an excellent job of debunking Bush's "few bad apples" excuse and argues effectively that capitalism tends toward abuse when government regulation is sidestepped. The short answer to the article's title question is "no." While Kuttner makes compelling comparisons with previous cycles of market excess and reform, suggesting that the current disgrace could revive the "liberal project," I'm less optimistic.
