GERSHOM GORENBERG'S "Intolerance: The Bestseller" [Sept. 23] provided an excellent summary of the Left Behind series. Since at least 1967, the Israeli government, and the Likud Party in particular, have encouraged the broader movement of Christian fundamentalist apocalypticism. Gorenberg notes the beginning of the pop-novelization of this theology in 1970 with Hal Lindsey's The Late Great Planet Earth.
