CHRIS MOONEY ASSERTS IN "Good Company" [Nov. 18] that the CIA's Directorate of Intelligence failed "with respect ... to predicting the Soviet collapse." In fact, the U.S. intelligence community produced a series of analyses and estimates in the late 1980s and 1990-1991 that exhibited a clear understanding of the problems facing the Soviet leadership and suggested that Mikhail Gorbachev's efforts could end in a coup attempt (which was the catalyst of the Soviet collapse).
