I AM WRITING IN RESPONSE to Ann Crittenden's review of the Kathryn Edin and Maria Kefalas book, Promises I Can Keep ["Their Babies Are Everything," June]. If only 25 percent of American families fit the characteristics of the traditional nuclear family, and 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, why do we persist in defining the nuclear family as normative? I don't want to romanticize single parenthood because it is very hard work, especially for a low-income mother trying to work and take care of her family.
