I HAVE READ CLOSELY PAUL Starr's article "The Liberal Project Now" [June 2005] and find it deeply disappointing on several levels.

First, you fail to see the fundamental reason the American people have begun to turn away from what you call "liberal." That is, people have begun to recognize that the central driving impulse of most modern liberalism is a denial of freedom and a restriction of choice.
