Who loses?(Letter to the Editor)

THOUGH I BELIEVE THE current data in Linda Hirshman's article "Homeward Bound" (December 2005), I also fear that getting all women out of the home and into the boardroom may yield consequences just as disastrous as leaving them to rot with dirty diapers and tattered copies of Dick and Jane.

The problem with the scenario that Hirshman describes is one that has dogged capitalism since Adam Smith. For every winner, there must be a loser. For every woman who is both a mother and the head of a Fortune 500 company, there must either be a father who stays at home deprived ...
