When Trimp the Rover visits Mossflower Woods, she entertains the workers at Redwall Abbey with a shanty about Luke the Warrior, the father of Martin of Redwall who hears her song. Martin sets out with Trimp to retrace Luke's footsteps and discover the truth about Martin's early years. They meet and befriend other animals on their journey who help them reach their destination. Martin meets an old mouse, Vurg, who was Luke's best friend and Beauclair Fetheringsol Cosfortingham, a hare, who served with Luke.
