This is a very useful reference book for high school students, librarians, and English teachers. Each of the 50 themes is arranged alphabetically and includes a discussion of three representative novels, and a list of additional related novels. Some of the thematic entries are: abandonment, betrayal, courage, death, family, imprisonment, loneliness, and survival. Each entry is approximately six to eight pages in length. There are two separate appendices: a list of additional selected themes and topics followed by fiction titles containing those themes; and an alphabetical listing of the 150 most commonly taught American novels discussed, followed by a list of additional topics contained...
