When you hear the word accountability used in reference to public schools, what images come to mind? Chances are, what you envision is greatly influenced by the educational policies pertaining to accountability in your state. Now ask yourself: Do the accountability policies in your state foster an accurate picture of the teaching and learning taking place at your school?
We, the authors of this article, are a diverse group of practitioners and researchers--representing military, higher education, home schooling, and public school educators--who have banded together around a common concern. We are all interested in the topic of accountability and the implications of various accountability practices....
