This splendid Festschrift presented to Sir Michael Howard on his "tactical withdrawal" to Yale from the Regius Professorship of Modern History at Oxford demonstrates the quality of work currently being produced by British scholars in the field of military history/strategic studies (v). The contributions range chronologically from Sir Geoffrey Elton's study of English society during the wars of Henry VIII to Malcolm Mackintosh's analysis of Soviet strategic doctrine under Mikhail Gorbachev. Their common thread is the need to integrate military aspects of history with the political, economic, social, and international aspects in order to gain a more sophisticated and complete understanding of the past.
