The American Historical Association presented its Albert J. Beveridge Award to Professor William B. Taylor of Southern Methodist University for his study of eighteenth-century Mexico. The award committee characterized the work as "masterful" saying that publication of this book inaugurates nothing less than a new era in the study of church-state relations in late colonial Mexico. The study has implications that reach beyond the period and considers in detail various aspects of day-to-day parochial life as well as diocesan and archdiocesan politics.
