Statement of Financial Accounting Standards (SFAS) No. 129, 'Disclosure of Information about Capital Structure,' was released by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in February, 1997. Upon examination, the statement appears to be an almost unintended side effect of the FASB's attempts to simplify earnings per share calculations, previously governed by Accounting Principle Board (APB) Opinion No. 15. This Opinion also contained disclosure requirements that did not relate necessarily to the calculation of earnings per share but that required the provision of some useful information about securities that was not required elsewhere.
