The Financial Times (March 13) reports that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is finally consulting at a high level with Health Canada on the increasingly urgent issue of cross-border pharmacy sales from Canadian stores to U.S. patients. For months now, daring Canadian drug entrepreneurs have been creating Web sites and mail-order services to deliver price-controlled Canadian drugs to U.S. consumers. The drug companies, who understandably do not want to lose their generous markups in the U.S. market, have begun to respond in recent weeks, threatening to cut off suspicious retailers or introducing over-the-counter price rebates available only at Canadian bricks-and-mortar stores.
