Anuclear war could devastate the global climate for years by lowering the worldwide average temperature by several degrees, according to a study by a team of scientists at Rutgers University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Lead author Alan Robock--a professor in the department of environmental sciences and associate director of the Center for Environmental Prediction at Rutgers' Cook College--and colleagues devised a model that predicts the potential climatic anomalies that a small-scale nuclear war could precipitate. They based their estimates on the exchange of 100 15-kiloton weapons between two countries in the subtropics.
