The Labor Department's composite measure of average prices for all construction materials and supplies rose by 0.4 percent between February and March, bringing the March 2000 composite index to a level 2.4 percent greater than in 1999. The current inflation rate is very accelerated above 1998-1999 trends.
Price trends vary widely for construction materials. Asphalt prices have been pushed sharply higher by the first-quarter spike in oil prices. But the inflation rate for gypsum products -- which led all construction categories with a better-than-17-percent rise during 1999 -- has stabilized and begun to fall in recent months as more production capacity has come on board.
