Dainippon and Nippon Steel Set Japanese Alkylphenols Venture

DAINIPPON INK & Chemicals Inc. (DIC) and Nippon Steel Chemical Co. Ltd. have formed a joint venture, Nishi Nihon Butyl Phenol Inc. to buy and operate the alkylphenol plant of Nippon Steel Chemical Co. Ltd.'s Hirohata Alkyl Phenol Co. Ltd. subsidiary Nippon Steel, which will retain a 10 percent stake in the new company, called Nishi Nihon Butyl Phenol Inc., will rent the facilities to Nishi Nihon. DIC will be responsible for marketing all output.

The new firm will begin operations May 1, says Takeomi Shimamura, assistant manager of business planning for the DIC petrochemicals division. It will use facilities in Nyogo prefecture that Hirohata built in 1994 with a capacity of 25 million pounds per year for mixed alkylphenols.
