Newly-Formed Merisol To Buy Rhodia's BHT In Integration Move

THE NEWLY FORMED Merisol joint venture between Merichem Company and Sasol Chemical Industries has signed a contract to acquire Rhodia Inc.'s plant in Oil City, Pa., that makes the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene. Merisol has set up Merisol Antioxidants LLC to operate the BHT business within the Merichem-Sasol venture.

At 12 million pounds of capacity per year, the Oil City plant is the largest producer of BHT in North America, and the fourth largest in the world. It is also the only North American producer of mono-butyl meta cresol (MBMC), an intermediate used largely in the production of three other antioxidant chemicals. The plant also makes purified meta cresol. The acquisition completes a raw material supply chain for the production of BHT....
