Polycarbonate pricing in chaos mode as Dow, Bayer move on latest boost.(Dow Chemical Co.)

Pricing chaos has hit the polycarbonate market in recent weeks despite a strong performance last year. With growth forecast to outpace 1997, feedstocks will likely remain snug for the near term. Dow Chemical Company is withdrawing its 16-cent-per-pound boost for extruded grades, originally slated for implementation on January 1, according to Gary O'Neill, senior product manager for polycarbonate.

Dow cites "competitive factors" as the reason for the withdrawal. Among those factors was Bayer Corporation's failure support the hike, Mr. O'Neill said.
