Ten years after the meeting of the United Nations World Commission of Environment and Development in Oslo, Norway, where the concept of sustainable development received support from environmental and social activists, the chemical industry is evaluating its future role. Although chemical companies have gone through an evolution to reach a point where recycling, reuse and other forms of resource management are part of business operations, the more difficult goals--namely energy conservation and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions--lie ahead. And, as chemical investment in developing regions increases, the question remains of how to achieve participation from both industry and the community-at-large in reaching goals of sustainability early in economic development....
